Just before the pandemic, author/teacher Jessica Lander visited Global Village Project (GVP), the special purpose middle school where I use singing to teach English to teenage refugee girls with interrupted education. She was making a journey visiting special places for immigrant education... and now GVP is in her book!
Jessica is coming to Charis Books to introduce her book to Atlanta, and, along with Mr. Crispin Ilombe Wilondja, GVP's Student & Family Engagement Manager, we will be having conversation about Jessica's new book and immigrant education.

Vocal Improvisation Workshop

Registration: https://elisewitt.com/web/calendar/050522-improv-workshop/

Expand your confidence and your consciousness in this singing workshop!

Play with melody, rhythm, language, harmony, vocal production, and soul connection. Get the gritty, technical, sensual sense of how the voice can draw powerfully on vocal wisdom from many cultures.
Explore the rainbow of colors inherent in our voices and join with other daring singers to create vocal landscapes, soulful harmonies, and impromptu sonic masterpieces. In her improvisation Singing Workshops, Elise uses games and exercises from her studies with master teachers Rhiannon, Bobbie McFerrin, David Darling, Dr. Fred Onovwerosuoke, and Dr. Ysaye Barnwell, which expand with our own creativity. We also explore SONGS as inspiration for improvisation.
Vocal Improvisation provides a safe and supportive space to stretch out and widen vocal horizons, and to express our authentic selves.
Music reading is not a prerequisite, but some knowledge of music theory can’t hurt.

Twenty-two of my songs have been arranged for SATB, SSAA, and TTBB choral groups by Michael Holmes. Check out the music and some beautiful performances by choirs, choruses, and small ensembles! More info click here.

One of my favorite ways to compose is making Polyrhythmic Multi-lingual Musical Collages. I made my first one with the students of Garden Hills Elementary in Atlanta, where there were 40 languages represented. David Marcus helped me arrange a wonderful composition with native speakers layering up 10 different languages over some danceable percussion!

Improv at Steve's Live Music 2012
This is a Spontaneous Improvisation with the audience at Steve's Live Music in Atlanta. It is a song of gratitude to live music, to all the musicians who make playing so much fun, and to folks who come to listen and are also willing to become part of the music.
