DESCRIPTION:BODY MUSIC WORKSHOP ~ Sat. Oct. 1 ~ 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nWorkshop admission: $15-55 sliding scale (please be affordable and generous)\n\n\n\nInnovative musicians/dancers with a quirky neo-trad soul\, Oakland\, CA-based Evie Ladin & Keith Terry throw down original folk songs and deep interpretations of old songs\, with the kinetic thrill of percussive dance. Truly entertaining acoustic performance for any age! \n\n\n\nUsing the oldest instrument on the planet — the human body — we clap\, snap\, step and vocalize our way through some very fun and funky\, original and traditional rhythmic music.  BODY MUSIC is an effective way of internalizing rhythmic work\, which enhances the development of time\, timing\, phrasing\, listening skills\, independence\, coordination and ensemble awareness.   There are many traditional Body Musics in the world\, from African-American Hambone and Flamenco Palmas to Sumatran Saman and Ethiopian Armpit music.  Since 1978 Keith Terry has developed a contemporary style of Body Music based on his training as a jazz drummer\, as well as his years of intensive study and collaboration with world rhythmic systems.  Evie Ladin’s style is grounded in Appalachian repertoire\, exploring all the cultural influences that are contained in those traditions. BODY MUSIC is a useful tool for anyone interested in deepening their rhythmic skills\, and is accessible to everyone\, no experience needed.   \n\n\n\nFri. Born and raised on Southern music\, from inner city Baltimore to Oakland\, she has taken home ribbons at stringband contests and won awards for albums.  \n\n\n\nShe can write\, she can sing\, and she pulls back from the saccharine brink with wit – a sharp intelligence. –Grant Alden\, No Depression \n\n\n\nLadin sings and plays infectious clawhammer banjo\, while Terry is a master percussionist. All of the songs are broken down into easily learnable parts and become thrilling to sing in a group. Becky performs and leads singing workshops and retreats\, using improvised singing and movement to inspire singers to write their own songs. In home state of New Mexico\, she plays with her band “Shepherd Moon”. Be on the lookout for Becky’s new songbook for all ages\, with illustrations by Taos\, NM Middle School art students whose wonderful teacher is Christine Autumn.
