Every year, the Global Village Welcome Walk is a chance for our community - including students, families, volunteers, donors, partners, and friends - to gather in the spirit of welcome. Our 10th annual Welcome Walk will take place in person on Saturday, November 5th! This year, we invite everyone to join us and celebrate our commitment to welcoming refugees with open arms.

Orr is the former president of Warren Wilson College and founder of the Swannanoa Gathering, an annual summer music festival. Orr co-wrote his landmark study with Fiona Ritchie, host of the “Thistle & Shamrock” public radio show. Darcy Orr provided illustrations for the book, which won the 2015 Thomas Wolfe Literary Award.

Through multi-lingual singing, students will gain a perception of the rich differences that exist between cultures, while also sensing the universal nature of music that binds the world together as one family. Students may learn a bi-lingual Puerto Rican song celebrating the human family, a Kiswahili counting song, an animal song in French, a clock song in Danish, a mystery song in Japanese, or a New Orleans vegetarian jazz song. Many songs will also be accompanied with Sign Language.
Community Singing Workshop. All of the songs are broken down into easily learnable parts and become thrilling to sing in a group. Even people who think they “can’t carry a tune in a bucket” in no time find themselves part of an Impromptu Glorious Chorus™.

A native of Washington, DC, Diane White-Clayton holds Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in music composition from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a B.A. degree in music from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri with emphases in composition, voice, and piano. As a rotary scholar, she studied classical piano at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, performing solo gospel concerts throughout Europe as an Ambassador of Goodwill. Student authors work very hard with our faculty to plan and produce a program that highlights their accomplishments as well as GVP’s unique and innovative approach to teaching and learning. The reception provides an opportunity for guests to mingle and converse with students, faculty, volunteers, and friends as we continue to grow our global village.
