SUMMARY:Brattleboro VTSinging Circle Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Singing Circle Workshop\nw/NATURAL RHYTHMS:\nTerry Garthwaite\, Becky Reardon\, & Elise Witt\n@ The Stone Church\n210 Main Street\, Brattleboro VT 05301 \nTickets here!\n$25-85 sliding scale (please be affordable & generous!) \nSinging together will take us deeply into the experience of being held and lifted by the sound of our voices making music together. We will be singing songs of celebration\, ceremony and community\, songs celebrating the earth and our own spirit and creativity\, songs of healing and passage\, songs of playfulness and joy. We will explore our wildly versatile voices in the rainbow of colors available to us individually and as an ensemble.\nEach member of the Trio brings her specialty to the circle. Drawing from her love of diverse melodies and rhythms\, Elise might introduce a Brazilian samba\, a Congolese storysong\, an Italian round\, or four-part harmonies from Zimbabwe. Beckys connection to nature and jazz brings us to listening deeply to our own voice and each other\, as we experience the being-in-the moment of easy improvisational games. Deeply rooted in rhythm\, Terry introduces songs and games interweaving and interlocking us in vocal percussion. There are also lots of Terry/Becky/Elise originals\, plus songs from the African American tradition\, quirky rounds\, food songs\, and lots more! All of the songs are broken down into easily learnable parts and become thrilling to sing in a group. Even people who think they cant carry a tune in a bucket in no time find themselves part of an Impromptu Glorious Chorus™. \nMusic reading is not a prerequisite.

SUMMARY:Jasper GAConcert of Global\, Local & Homemade Songs™
DESCRIPTION:Mon. April 8\n7:00 p.m. \nCasual Classic Concert Series\nfeaturing \nElise Witt & the Mezzanine Band\nLegend has it Elise sang before she talked\, and she’s been singing every since. Elise has created a life combining her two passions: language and music. From her farm-ette in Pine Lake GA\, she travels far and wide\, instigating Impromptu Glorious Chorus™ adventures for singers and people who think they aren’t singers\, but secretly know that’s a lie. “She could get a colony of ants singing!” enthused a workshop participant. \nBorn in Switzerland\, raised in North Carolina\, and living in Atlanta since 1977\, Elise speaks 5 languages and sings in at least a dozen more. She has taken her concerts of Global\, Local & Homemade Songs™ to Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center and community centers around the country. She has been a cultural ambassador to South Africa\, Italy\, Nicaragua\, Yugoslavia\, Switzerland\, and China. \nElise sang for 20 years with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus as well as the Robert Shaw Singers\, with whom she performed annually at Carnegie Hall. She now composes music for choirs in the Elise Witt Choral Series\, arranged by Michael Holmes. As a life-long student herself\, Elise has studied extensively with masters of improvisation Bobby McFerrin\, David Darling\, and Rhiannon\, African vocal expert Dr. Fred Onovwerosuoke\, and Sweet Honey in the Rock’s Dr. Ysaye Maria Barnwell\, all of whose pedagogy she incorporates into her own teaching and composing. \nCurrently Elise serves as Artist-in-Residence at the Global Village Project\, a school for teenage refugee girls from Afghanistan\, Burma\, Congo\, Ethiopia\, Eritrea\, Iraq\, Somalia\, and Central African Republic\, using singing to teach English\, write songs\, and empower young women to reach their full potential.

SUMMARY:Willow Springs NCCantamos con Ritmo
DESCRIPTION:Wed. April 3\n9:10 a.m. \n@ Willow Springs Elementary\nA bi-lingual artsploration /  celebration exploring the Spanish Language and the Contagious Rhythms of Latin America\, Spain\, and the Caribbean! \nwith Beverly Botsford & Elise Witt\nJoin international vocalist Elise Witt & cross-cultural percussionist Beverly Botsford in an inspired collaboration that honors traditions in a contemporary spirit\, Elise & Beverly are the guides on a journey using the two oldest forms of musical expression.\nStudents join in polyrhythms and vocal harmonies on everything from Cuban son and Chilean nueva canción to Spanish flamenco and a Nicaraguan food song! We will even create a “polyrhythmic sound painting” using Thank You’s from around the world. Music is a language used by people all over the world\, a bridge that brings us together as one human family. When we learn songs from other countries\, we learn to appreciate what makes each culture different\, special\, and unique.\n \nBEVERLY BOTSFORD has performed in Africa\, Asia\, Europe\, Cuba\, and all over the Americas. For 13 years Beverly travelled with the Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble\, is on the music faculty of the American Dance Festival\, has studied Afro-Cuban culture and percussion in her travels to Cuba\, and currently tours internationally with jazz singer Nnenna Freelon. \nTogether\, Beverly and Elise have sung and played in schools around the Southeast\, working with Kindergarten through High School age students including students studying Spanish\, French\, Chorus\, Band\, Theater\, Dance\,and core academics. Their collaborations have also included Teacher Workshops and polyrhythmic/multi-tonal Workshops for Adults. “Singing Hands\,” their residency at Creekside High School in Atlanta\, was featured in Pass It On\, the national journal of the Children’s Music Network. In addition to being animated and entertaining performers\, Beverly and Elise are known and loved as Educators who pass on their passion for singing\, percussion\, and world. \nWe think the key to better understanding and appreciating music and foreign language is to get children involved in fun\, high energy\, interactive music and language experimentation\, and that is exactly what ‘Cantamos con Ritmo’ did for our students!   \n~ Joyner Elementary School\, Raleigh NC \nThis terrific team of two captivated both elementary and middle school students. Phenomenal!   \n~ Corinth Holders School\, Zebulon NC
