SUSHMA’S STORY<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always been interested in many different things
\nI\u2019ve wanted to be a doctor and a farmer
\nAnd work in agriculture
\nMy favorite color is yellow
\nMy superpower is invisibility!<\/p>\n

My name is Sushma Barakoti.
\nI am from Nepal.
\nMy mom and dad grew up in Burma
\nBut they are from Nepal.<\/p>\n

You ask how I met my husband
\nWe worked together at United Nations
\nWe moved to the US but we didn\u2019t get married
\nI wanted to study and work for a while.
\nWe got married when I was 32
\nI married when I wanted to!<\/p>\n

When I arrived in the USA
\nI had no full time job
\nI wanted to contribute to women in Nepal
\nSo I brought arts and crafts from Nepal to sell<\/p>\n

When I was getting my Masters, I thought in Nepali,
\nWhen I did my homework, I translated to English
\nI was always so tired…
\nMy husband said \u201cYou have to think in English!\u201d
\nNow I can think in English and Nepali<\/p>\n

I\u2019m Director at the Refugee Women\u2019s Network,
\nWe help with health and hygiene,
\nEducation and finances,
\nWe encourage women to come out of the house,
\nTo talk and socialize and learn from each other
\nWe can help your moms and sisters find jobs<\/p>\n

My daughter Amaya is 13 years old
\nShe loves violin
\nAnd drama and gym… nastics
\nMy son\u2019s name Atulia means \u201c\u201dincomparable\u201d and
\n\u201cunique\u201d
\nHe loves violin and soccer, and he loves to argue
\nI told him he should be a lawyer<\/p>\n

My favorite law is the VAW
\nThat\u2019s the Violence Against Women Act
\nIt protects women in so many different ways.
\nDomestic violence is now a crime<\/p>\n

If I could change anything in Georgia
\nI would change the healthcare system.
\nWe need to expand Medicare
\nAnd make health care for everyone
\nYes make health care for everyone!<\/p>\n
