Free Concert for Family Fun Fest
@ The Woodruff Arts Center
Now in its 8th year, the Global Village Project (GVP) is a special purpose middle school in Decatur GA, serving teenage refugee girls with interrupted education from Afghanistan, Burma, Burundi, Congo, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iraq, Nepal, Somalia, and Syria. The arts are infused into the whole curriculum, and students write songs, share music from their home cultures, and learn songs from the global peace and justice repertoire.
The Global Village Chorus, acting as an ambassador for the school, creates bridges between the refugee community and the communities of Clarkston (where students’ families live), Decatur (where the school is housed), and the greater Atlanta community. Recent performances include the MountainFilmFestATL and a collaboration with playwright Pearl Cleage at the Woodruff Arts Center. GVP is also becoming a model of strength-based education for immigrants and refugees around the country and the world.
